Book "Linz Texas" (D)
2009 is Linz' year as European Capital of Culture. This calls for the creation of a new profile for the Upper Austrian provincial capital, which has shown a remarkable talent for reinventing itself in the recent past. Whose example can Linz learn from, and what lessons learnt can it pass on to others? What does Linz have in common with Madrid, Wolfsburg or Seattle? Which of its attributes are shared by Moscow, Manchester or Davos? An urban road movie sets out to find the answers. In a visual dialogue with other cities, LINZ TEXAS develops a both atmospheric and challenging reading of a medium-sized city which ventures far beyond the familiar methods of urban representation.

With contributions by Shumon Basar, Angelika Fitz, Klemens Gruber, Martin Heller, Bart Lootsma, Christina Nägele, Angelika Schnell, Dietmar Steiner and Roemer van Toorn.

History Book
 Why this Book?
Why an additional publication about contemporary history for the Capital of Culture year? Why a book about that particular period in the city's recent past, which is among the darkest epochs of the twentieth century and is still perceptible in Linz itself?
Linz09 is not trying to reinvent how history is dealt with. Over the past twenty years, the city has put a lot of energy into dealing critically with the Nazi era. Numerous research projects and publications are proof of this endeavour. Coming to terms with history has been pursued more intensively here than elsewhere - the current state of research and level of knowledge is good. For Linz09 it is about finding new arrative forms that speak to both local residents and visitors from across Europe. The Linz09 programme encompasses different types of narrative - this history can be treated polemically, matter-of-factly, soberly or provocatively. The number and variety of different strategies are understood as a chance to prioritise a multi-faceted individual standpoint over frequently simplified answers. An engagement with this kind of complex standpoint aims to open up the possibilities for finding personal approaches to investigating history independently and internalising it.

Book "Linz Atlas" (D)
An atlas will show how Linz came to be what it is and what makes Linz special. Maps explain what pictures can only suggest: the quality of life in Linz compared to other cities in Europe.
Linz is situated at the province's wasp waist. This is where the centre is. It is only here, of all places in Upper Austria, that a capital could have developed. The key question that LINZ ATLAS sets out to answer is: What makes life in this city worth living for its inhabitants? And how and on what scale is this to be measured? For LINZ ATLAS a selection has been made from the wealth of available data that is immediately relevant to the everyday reality of individual residents. For some, a roof above their head is all important, for others the great variety of cultural events to choose from, a well structured system of child care, the quality of the schools, of public transport or even the air. But although the expectations of different segments of the population differ in the way they are weighted, one aspect remains the same: Social and ecological criteria in the assessment of the quality of life are gaining in importance all the time. How are the city's resources put to use? Applying strict standards makes a European comparison possible. Linz is the point of reference for this book that assigns Linz its place within a United Europe.
